0010. App-store distribution and the CLA
- Status: Accepted
- Date: 2026-10-27
Context
Section titled “Context”Apple’s App Store terms conflict with GPL-family licenses, which would stop us distributing the POS app through the stores shops actually use. We also want to keep a hosted version or future relicensing possible without asking every past contributor.
Decision
Section titled “Decision”LICENSE adds an additional permission under AGPL section 7 that allows distribution through the Apple App Store, Google Play and similar stores, as long as the Corresponding Source stays available under the AGPL. Outside contributions require a licence-grant Contributor License Agreement in the style of the Apache ICLA; contributors keep their copyright. The CLA is collected by the CLA Assistant bot once the repository is public. The README promises that OpenKedai will always be available under the AGPL-3.0.
Consequences
Section titled “Consequences”- The POS app can be published in the App Store and Google Play.
- Maintainers can offer a hosted version or relicense in future; the AGPL promise keeps community trust.
- A lawyer must review the app-store permission and the CLA text before the repository is published or the app is first released to a store.
